Get a Groq API key
Groq is the cloud option we recommend. It transcribes very quickly, it’s the cheapest provider Abe supports ($0.04 per hour of talking), and you can start on its free plan: a payment method is only requested if you upgrade. This guide takes about five minutes and you don’t need any technical knowledge.
What you’ll need
Section titled “What you’ll need”- An email address (or an account you can sign in with, if Groq offers that option).
- Abe installed on your computer. See Getting started.
1. Create a free Groq account
Section titled “1. Create a free Groq account”-
Open console.groq.com in your web browser. This is GroqCloud, Groq’s website for developers. Don’t worry about the word “developer”: you won’t need to write any code.
-
Click Sign up (or Log in if you already have an account) and follow the instructions. If Groq emails you a confirmation link, open it to finish signing up.
-
You land on the GroqCloud dashboard. You’re on the Free plan, which is all you need to get started.
2. Create your API key
Section titled “2. Create your API key”-
Open the API Keys page. You can click API Keys in the menu, or go straight to console.groq.com/keys.
-
Click Create API Key.
-
Type a name you’ll recognize later, such as
Abe on my laptop, and confirm (the button is usually Submit). -
Groq shows your new key. It’s a long line of letters and numbers that starts with
gsk_. Click the copy button next to it.
3. Paste the key into Abe
Section titled “3. Paste the key into Abe”-
Open Abe and go to Settings → Transcription. (The first-run setup screen asks the same question, so you can also do this there.)
-
Choose Use my own API key.
-
Pick Groq as the provider.
-
Click in the key box and paste your key (Ctrl + V, or Cmd + V on a Mac).
-
Click Test. After a moment, Abe confirms that your key works.
-
Try it: click into any text box, hold the dictation hotkey (Ctrl + Alt + Space by default), say a sentence and let go.
If the test fails, see Troubleshooting below.
4. Set up Voice Transform (optional)
Section titled “4. Set up Voice Transform (optional)”Voice Transform rewrites selected text by voice (“make it formal”, “turn this into bullet points”). It needs a chat model, and your Groq key works for that too, even if you transcribe locally.
In Settings, set the Transform provider to Groq and the model to openai/gpt-oss-120b (Abe’s default for Groq).
This is the model we recommend: it’s fast, it follows editing instructions well, and a typical transform costs a tiny fraction of a cent. If you want something even cheaper, openai/gpt-oss-20b also works.
Which model and why
Section titled “Which model and why”| Use | Model | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dictation | whisper-large-v3-turbo (Abe’s default for Groq) |
Fast, accurate in many languages, and $0.04 per hour of audio |
| Dictation, maximum accuracy | whisper-large-v3 |
Slightly more accurate, a bit slower, $0.111 per hour |
| Voice Transform | openai/gpt-oss-120b (Abe’s default for Groq) |
Good at following editing instructions, very fast on Groq. openai/gpt-oss-20b is cheaper |
Groq bills at least 10 seconds per recording, so a 3-second clip is billed as 10 seconds. At these prices that’s still a tiny amount.
Free plan, billing and spend limits
Section titled “Free plan, billing and spend limits”The free plan. You can start on Groq’s free plan; a payment method is only requested if you upgrade. The free plan has rate limits: a cap on how many recordings and how much audio you can send per minute, hour and day. Groq’s published limits for its Whisper models are 20 recordings a minute, 2,000 a day, and 2 hours of audio per hour (8 hours a day), which is plenty for normal dictation. Limits apply to your whole Groq account, not to each key. You can see your exact limits at Settings → Limits (console.groq.com/settings/limits). On the free plan a single recording can be up to 25 MB.
Upgrading (only if you need it). If you hit the limits often, upgrade to the paid Developer plan:
-
Go to Settings → Billing (console.groq.com/settings/billing) and choose to upgrade to the Developer plan.
-
Add a payment method (Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover card, US bank account, or SEPA debit).
-
There’s no upfront charge. Groq bills you at the end of the month, or earlier when your total usage first passes $1, $10, $100, $500 and $1,000. Groq doesn’t charge amounts under $0.50.
Set a spend limit (recommended once you’re on the paid plan). A spend limit blocks your key when you reach a monthly amount you choose, so a leaked key can’t run up a bill:
-
Go to Settings → Billing → Limits (console.groq.com/settings/billing/limits).
-
Click Add Limit and enter a monthly amount in US dollars. For dictation, $5 is generous.
-
Optionally add email alerts, for example at 50%, 75% and 90% of the limit.
-
Click Save.
Spend limits are only available on the paid plan, and only to the account owner. Groq updates your spending every 10 to 15 minutes, so you could go slightly over. The limit resets on the 1st of each month. You can watch your usage at Dashboard → Usage (console.groq.com/dashboard/usage).
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”| Abe says | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “Your API key was rejected. Check it in Settings.” | The key is wrong, incomplete, deleted, or from another provider | Copy the key again, making sure you got all of it and that Groq is selected. If you no longer have it, create a new key. |
| “The provider is rate limiting you. Try again in a moment.” | You hit a free-plan limit (per minute, hour or day) | Wait a minute and try again. If it happens a lot, upgrade to the Developer plan. |
| “Your provider account is out of credit.” | Your spend limit was reached, or a payment failed | Raise or remove the limit in Settings → Billing → Limits, or update your payment method in Settings → Billing. |
| “The selected model is not available. Check Settings.” | The model name is misspelled or retired | Use whisper-large-v3-turbo for dictation and openai/gpt-oss-120b for Voice Transform. |
| “This recording is too long for the provider.” | The recording is over 25 MB (free plan) or 100 MB (paid) | Keep recordings shorter, or lower Max Duration in Settings → Advanced. |
| “Couldn’t reach the provider. Check your connection.” | No internet, or a VPN, proxy or firewall is blocking Groq | Check your connection and try again. |
| “The provider took too long to respond.” | Groq was slow or briefly unavailable | Try again in a moment. Groq doesn’t charge for its own server errors. |
Delete or replace a key
Section titled “Delete or replace a key”Delete a key if you lost it, think someone else saw it, or no longer use Abe on that computer:
-
Go to console.groq.com/keys.
-
Find the key by its name and delete it from the list.
-
To keep using Abe, create a new key and paste it into Settings → Transcription, then click Test.
To remove the key from Abe itself, click Remove next to it in Settings.
