Audio ducking

Audio ducking turns down music, videos and calls while you’re recording, so they don’t drown you out or end up in your transcription. When you stop, the volume comes back.

Settings → Advanced → Recording → Audio Ducking is a slider for how loud other apps should be while you record:

Setting Effect
20% (default) Other apps play at a fifth of their volume
Off (100%) Nothing changes
Mute others (0%) Other apps go silent while you record
  • Windows: Abe lowers the volume of other applications individually and leaves its own sounds alone.
  • macOS: Abe lowers the overall system output volume instead, then restores it.
  • Linux: support depends on your audio system and may be unavailable.
