Getting past the security prompts

Abe needs to hear your microphone and type into other apps, so your OS will ask you to confirm a few things the first time.

Windows SmartScreen

New releases can show "Windows protected your PC" until they build up reputation with Microsoft. Click More info, check that the publisher is correct, then Run anyway.

No administrator rights are needed. The installer sets up Microsoft's WebView2 runtime if it's missing; Windows 11 already has it.

macOS Gatekeeper and permissions

Open the .dmg and drag Abe to Applications. On first launch, allow:

  • Microphone, to hear you.
  • Accessibility, to paste or type into other apps.
  • Input Monitoring, to notice your global hotkey.
  • Automation, to paste text into other applications.

Find them under System Settings → Privacy & Security. If macOS says the app can't be opened, right-click Abe in Applications and choose Open.

Linux

Coming soon. Linux isn't supported yet, so there's no Linux download for now. Watch the releases on GitHub to hear when it lands.

Then choose how Abe transcribes

The setup screen asks you to pick Local (offline, free, no key) or Use my own API key. For a key, we recommend Groq: it's fast, cheap and has a free tier. Our step-by-step guide takes about five minutes.
